Megan is Missing

Interaction with crime files and friendships with detectives fueled fire of painful subject matter that he knew had to be filmed.
by Christine Purse

Most people know Michael Goi, ASC, as an accomplished cinematographer with 50+ credits on top television shows such as “The Mentalist,” and “My Name Is Earl”.  They may also know him as the President of the ASC, a role he assumed in 2009, or from the large community of his alma mater, Columbia College, where he attended film school in his native Chicago.  But with the independently financed film “Megan Is Missing”, Goi has revealed a powerful directing talent coupled with the ability to tackle the most intense subject matter imaginable: child abduction.

During his many years of production, Michael had worked closely with police investigators as technical advisors and eventually those advisors became friends.  Over time, they revealed bleak stories from their case files.  Michael heard tales of young men and women who vanished, taken from their lives by missteps, bad luck or bad timing.  What he came to see clearly was that when a predator goes after a child, the child loses.  Compelled by stories of missing and murdered victims, he dug deeper into a number of cases.  Looking around at his friends’ children, he knew he wanted to tell the story of what happens when a child steps in the path of a determined psychopath.  He wanted to show that it can happen to anyone’s child. NokiaNational Film Board of Canada Launches iPhone App

The National Film Board of Canada released an iPhone app that provides a free, full viewing of 1,375 films in English and French. The hundreds of documentaries, animated films and trailers are streamed over WiFi, 3G and EDGE wireless networks. “We continue to add new films every week, depending on how many we clear the rights for and can digitize,” says Deborah Drisdell, NFB director general of accessibility and digital enterprises.

The iPhone app links to NFB’s site for accessing movies which was launched this last January. Having just celebrated its 70th anniversary, the NFB decided to take advantage of technology to provide wider accessibility to the some 13,000 films made under its aegis. More

Createasphere Launches Digital Asset Management Conference

On February 17 & 18, 2010, Createasphere will launch its newest event, the Createasphere Digital Asset Management Conference and Expo.  Co-located with the Createasphere Entertainment Technology Expo, the Digital Asset Management conference will provide attendees and exhibitors a valuable opportunity to explore the challenges of digital media then step next door to experience the cutting edge of entertainment technology in one value packed event.  The two events put a broad spectrum of people who are intimately involved with the creative and technical process, together in one location.

"DAM is of profound concern to content creators and content holders alike," noted Kristin Petrovich, President of HD EXPO. "We believe that this will be the game changing topic of the next decade."  Global spending on digital asset management is forecast to increase from $500 million in 2009 to over $1 billion by 2014.   While such rapid growth brings tremendous opportunity, it also brings unforeseen threats to entertainment and media organizations and changes the way people work.  "This transition is driving rapid adoption of new technology, project development, workflows, and security protocols within the industry, which is creating demand for a new breed of professionals.  We want to help our community be ready for this transition and to put ourselves in the midst of the change."

Heading up the Createasphere Digital Asset Management conference team is Mary Yurkovich, a DAM expert.  She joins the team from a long stint at Playboy in Chicago, where she was Manager for Playboy Enterprises Digital Asset Management and Distribution.   She brings a depth of technological and hands on expertise to the launch of DAM.

Topics set for exploration in February include Increasing Revenue and Efficiency Through DAM Strategies, Managing Social Media with DAM, Rights Management and Content Protection, Taxonomy, and Preservation of Video Assets, among many others.  For further information visit http://www.createasphere.com/DAM

ChinaOn December 3rd, HD EXPO - CREATEASPHERE steps into Macao, China to produce the International Digital Cinema Festival and Entertainment Technology Expo.
